McGehee III, Fielding M.
This is a summary of the audio file in this database as Q665, prepared by Fielding M. McGehee III of the Jonestown Institute. The audio is an 8 minute excerpt from the original tape which is available on the Institute's Web site. Note that the summary misidentifies the article read by Gelb during the conversation as "appearing in the Times," whereas it actually appeared in the August 15, 1977 issue of Newsweek. It also misidentifies Gelb, who had been a New York Times correspondent, as still with the Times at that point, whereas since February of 1977 Gelb had been the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Politico-Military Affairs (until June 30, 1979). Prokes was a spokesperson for Peoples Temple. The original tape was retrieved by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of their inquiry into the assassination of Congressman Leo J. Ryan on November 18, 1978. The original summary on the Institute's Web site includes "People Named," a summary of the rest of the tape, and a note that the referenced conversation "was apparently recorded about one week after Jim Jones left the U.S. for Guyana." The title here was provided by Fielding M. McGehee III.
