The miniature railway, Venice, California
The "miniature railway," with open cars that acted as a shuttle to all parts of the Venice of America, is here stopped in the middle of a turn as people get on and off. This scene on Windward Avenue is misidentified as the Midway on another version of this card. The railroad started at the end of July 1905, traveling two miles from Windward Avenue through the canals, Washington Boulevard, then Mildred, and back to Windward. Except for a year-long shutdown in 1906, the railway ran from then until 1925, when it stopped operating. The Ocean Park Bank is on the right. A similar but closer picture on another postcard shows a sign for the bank and the number 2 engine at the front of this turnaround at the east end of Windward Avenue across from the Venice Lagoon. The number 1505 is in the left lower corner.
