Calico was discovered in the spring of 1881 by Frank Mecham, his uncle Doc Yager and two deputy sheriffs. The find was named after the sheriff, King, uncle of Walter Knott who had grub staked the party. The color had been noticed some time before by Lafayette Mecham, father of Frank. Mining had been going on in the area some time before this strike. The ore never did play out in the Calico mines, with the drop in silver price and the higher costs of mining the operation just closed up. Calico kept going for some time after the mines closed with the operation of borax. Today the camp is again in operation as a tourist attraction... M.P.
