Porter, Merle
The ghost town of Calico is in the Calico hills nine miles east of Barstow. A lengthy paragraph on the back by the photographer Merle Porter gives a history of the discovery of silver there in 1881 and the town's development as a silver-mining then borax-mining community. Not only does Knott's Berry Farm have a Calico Ghost Town on its property near Los Angeles, but Walter Knott, founder of the farm, had a homestead nearby and purchased the town (1951), making its restoration his project. He donated it to San Bernardino County in 1966, when it became a county regional park. Numbers on the divided back, 8l-498 and S19011-1, probably belong to the publisher and photographer.
