Mahan, Max
The photograph attributed to Max Mahan is of the "Boot Hill" or cemetary of the town of Calico in the Calico hills nine miles east of Barstow. A paragraph on the back explains that the cemetary contains the remains of 200 people dating from 1881-1945, with plots reserved for residents still living there. The last sentence states: "(This is a restoration project of Knott's Berry Farm.)" Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm was responsible both for restoring the original Calico and for building the Calico Ghost Town at the farm in Buena Vista. The epitaph visible here reads: "Wes. Wescott 1871-1889 hung in his youth, t'was a sad mistake when we found the truth." There are two numbers on this card--H201 near the Columbia name and address on the left back, and 10513 at the middle of the bottom of the dividing line.
