Two sphinxes guard the entrance to the golf course as an automobile exits. The entire title is "Sphinx used in the filming of Cecil De Mille's 'The Ten Commandments,' entrance to Santa Maria Golf Course, Santa Maria, California." On the back, the description continues: "Santa Maria Valley, on the Coast Highway, produces sugar beets, beans, lettuce, flower seeds, fruit and oil--a mild, genial climate, never hot or cold. For further details write Chamber of Commerce, Santa Maria, California." The DeMille film mentioned had been made the year before, in 1923, and most of the properties made for the film were buried by crew in the sands of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. The Teich number at the top of the dividing line on the back is A-100130, from which the date is derived.
