Although Cawston's Ostrich Farm raised birds to sell their feathers, they also had a tourist business partially promoted through streetcar lines that ran to the farm. Ostriches pulled carts and carriages, and there were tours, clothing, and souvenirs for sale. Like many ostriches at the farm, this one was named for a famous person, Major William McKinley (president of the United States from 1897-1901), who served in the Civil War of 1861-1865. Toward the bottom, just behind the back foot of the ostrich, the author of the message on the other side of this card has signed her name in black ink, "Lucile."
