Two insets interrupt the illustration of Port Los Angeles from a viewpoint under the prow of a ship with anchor aweigh: one is of a sailing ship with cargo on the wharf; the other shows ships of varying types, from steamers to sailboats, on the water. In 1893 the Southern Pacific Railroad built a 4,600-foot wharf a half mile north of Santa Monica Canyon, beginning the Free Harbor Fight that led to the development of the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro Bay. The wharf was abandoned in 1913 and torn down in 1920. The publisher's number on the divided back of this German-made card is 51005.
