Deteriorated Old Plank Road near El Centro, California
Photographic paper: EKC
The Old Plank Road was used from 1914 to 1926 to traverse shifting sand dunes in the Sand Hills area (Algodones Dunes) of Imperial County. It was 7 miles long, in sections measuring 8 X 12 feet meant to be moveable when necessary over shifting sand. The road appears to be partially deteriorating and covered with sand, suggesting that this photograph was taken after Highway 80 replaced this section with a paved road. This is a Real Photo Post Card (RPPC) made with EKC photo paper (as evidenced in the stampbox on the back of this card). The Real Photo process allowed photographers to take a "snap shot" and have it finished at a photo shop that printed it out on postcard backing for mailing. This EKC photo paper was made from 1930-1950.
